Have You Read … WONDER WOMAN?

Wonder Woman: The Circle, Gail Simone
Wonder Woman has always been a bit of a let down in the female superhero category, for the chief reason that she’s supposed to be the strong Amazon, sharp of tongue and quick of wit, but really ends up being a bit of a “suffering Sappho.” Gail Simone’s Wonder Woman, however, reclaims the hero’s original premise—that of the warrior, diplomat, and goddess. The Circle harkens back to the creation of Wonder Woman in a series of flashbacks, while in the present she attempts to save her home world using the vicious fighting techniques that somehow manage to spare her enemy as well as defeat them.
As Gail Simone herself says, “When you need to stop an asteroid, you get Superman. When you need to solve a mystery, you call in Batman. But when you need to end a war, you get Wonder Woman.” She is finally placed on her proper pedestal among superheroes in The Circle; it’s a powerful and fulfilling read.
This comic is recommended for Teen readers, ages 13 and up.
In local news, Wonder Woman Day IV, a benefit and celebration for domestic violence shelters and crisis lines, was held this past Sunday (Oct. 25th) at Excalibur Comics on Hawthorne Blvd. There were on-site auctions of original art and sketches from over a hundred artists, as well as guest signings by such prominents as the Hernandez Brothers, Gail Simone, and several others. Check out the Wonder Woman Museum online here.
