American Elf: Book 3, by James Kochalka

American Elf represents a two-year diary of the life of James Kochalka as he tries to find his way through middle age. The jokes are subtle and the stories bittersweet as he discovers the simple joy of spending time with his wife and child. Much like in real life, the panels almost never end in a pratfall. Instead, the reader is shown life without pretensions. At times the stories pile on the saccharine, but this is balanced by absolute raunchiness when James paints an uncompromising picture of married life. Kinda like if Family Circus actually showed what happened inside the bedroom (which would make its readers go blind). It is undoubtedly this voyeuristic quality that has made this series so popular with such a wide audience. This is truly a thinking man’s (or woman’s) comic book.

This book is recommended for Mature audiences, Ages 18 and up.
